We want to allow our employees to IM only the contacts that appear in our
Active directory and switch off file transfer. We do not want to allow access
to the .NEt Messenger. Another key point is can chats on IM within the
company be audited? Can chats be saved at a server level or only locally?
Does it comply with the data protection act?

Greetings,

There is no policy to magically do this.  You'll have to use solutions like IMLogic or deploy
a local Live Communications Server to do all of what you're describing.
