When windows messenger is removed, will passwords to automatically sign in to
windows messenger also be removed?
Jonathan Kay [MVP] - 27 Jun 2006 12:54 GMT
Greetings,

Nope, they're stored in your Windows Crendentials file.  To remove those, click the Start
Button, then click the Control Panel.  Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select
your account name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click
'Manage my Network Passwords'.  In the window that opens, you can remove an account by
clicking the passport you wish to delete [denoted by (Passport)], and then click the 'Remove'
button. For more detailed
instructions and screenshots on this procedure, see here:

I tired removing, but when I click on remove, nothing happens. Also, no
message is given.

Hi,

Let me guess, you're using the Dutch version of Windows XP.  Unfortunately the Dutch version
has a translation error in it which causes this problem (I've bugged this countless times but
it's never been fixed).

The easiest solution is just to stop .NET Passports from being saved or used in Windows XP by
downloading and running this .reg file:

You'll need to reboot to see the change.

Will the password that is stored be deleted, or will only new .net password
no longer be set?

Hi,

The actual store where the .NET Passports are won't be accessed anymore with the reg key
established.  However, the actual data storing the Passports will still exist.  The only real
way to remove those in the Dutch version of XP is to make a new Windows user account (well
there's other ways but they're not recommended unless you're familiar with binary patching
and some other topics).

There was a better way pre-SP1 but I'm afraid that was removed too.

How do I make a new windows user account? Do you mean that I have to delete
this account (there is only 1 user account and it has administrator rights)
and replace it by another account?

Hi,

You make another account in the Users settings in Control Panel, then log off and into that
account.  Once you have all your settings and profile information imported into the new one,
then you simply go into the Users in the new one account and delete the old one.
