Greetings John,
It's possible the non-instant messaging contacts are showing. To turn them off, just open up
the contact list, press Alt on the keyboard to bring up the menubar, choose Contacts, then
choose Filter contacts and then choose Messenger contacts only.

Greetings Jonathan:
Thanks for your response, but it didn't solve the problem. Whether I select
all contacts or messenger contacts, it lists each contact twice in the list.
If I select online contacts, it appears to list the conact just once. This
problem of multiple listing of contacts started after I updated Windows Live
Messenger to the new BETA version.
