after 2 hours on the phone with HP support, trying to
remove Messenger from my computer to stop annoying pop-
ups telling me
"A Newer version is available. You MUST install now in
order to continue....."
I was given the number to MIcrosoft, who refused to help
without charging....This is my last hope....help!! I jut
bought this machine month ago, and messenger and it's
pop ups are driving me crazy....
if anyone can tell me how to get rid of this FOREVER, it
would be greatly appreciated.....

If you're having problems with Windows Messenger,
just "disable it" the hard way.
Go to C:\Program Files\Messenger and rename two files.
Change them to whatever you want.
The filenames you have to change are (and how I renamed
them):
msmsgsin.exe -> (msmsgsin-bak.exe)
msmsgs.exe -> (msmsgs-bak.exe)
Hope that helps.

Often, when attempting to rename the file "msmsgs" a popup
will tell you this file is being used and can't be renamed.

Greetings Ed,
To remove it forever (or until you actually go to the Messenger website and download it
again), close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the
notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run
and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Guys! He is getting Messenger Service Pop ups, not IM messeges.
Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Right click on
Messenger and left click on properties. Change "Startup Type:" to
"Disabled". Note that this service is commonly used by Information Services
departments and LAN administrators in bussiness environments to notify staff
members when servers are about to be shut down for maintenence.
