People have been talking about Windows Messenger 5.  Does it exist, and
if so, where do I get it?  How come Messenger hasn't told me an update
exists?  I have Windows XP Pro with Windows Messenger 4.7.  Thanks in
advance.

Greetings,

It does exist, you can find it here:

Windows Messenger 4.7 does not notify you of this as Windows Messenger 5.x does remove some
features from 4.7 (like Add-In support, hence no Hotmail, MSN Mobile, MSN Profile, etc.) and
as such, to avoid confusion, there is no automatic upgrade nor notification that 5.0 exists
in 4.7.

Are there any benefits to upgrading, then?

Hi,

Well besides built-in Exchange IM and SIP-based communications service support (like Office
Live Communications Server 2003), there's also support for digital ink (TabletPC "ink") and
UPnP file transfers.
