messenger typing delay

What causes a delay between keyboard entry and the text showing up in the dialog box for Windows Messenger? Sometimes the delay is up to a minute between the actual keystroke and the text displaying. My wife is getting really annoyed with the delay and I've tried everything I can think of. I've checked background processes during her messenger sessions, nothing seems to be taking an extreme amount of resources from the system

system: pentium 2Ghz w/448Mb ra
os: windows X
modem connection @ 44kbps

You may just need to upgrade the version of DirectX you have installed:
