Greetings Fallen,

Although you can forcibly remove Windows Messenger, if you do, features like Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing within MSN Messenger 6.x and Windows will no
longer work.  As well, some applications that specifically call on Messenger (like for
example Outlook Express) will appear to freeze or refuse to load as they try to start
Messenger (you can however, turn off this functionality to fix this problem).

Instead, you can simply disable Windows Messenger.  To do so, open it up (click Start, then
Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this
Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on
version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger
to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove Windows Messenger, so
features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will continue to work,
but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed?  Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

If you'd prefer to just remove Windows Messenger however, you can do so by following the
instructions here:

What happens when you try to install it (error messages, etc.)?

Hi Jonathan,

I have also been experiencing a similar problem. However, by disabling the
IM protection of Norton, am I not opening myself up to viruses that someone
can transmit to me via MSN Msger?

Another problem I am experiencing in addition to Msger 7.5 being
"interrrupted" is other people seeing my Msger as being active even when my
PC isn't even on. I *do not* have Msger enabled at startup; I prefer to
manually start up MSN Msger when I want to use it. Additionally, I have
removed Windows Msger as I use Outlook, not Outlook express and it is
functioning fine without the Win Msger.

Thanks for you feedback,

~SubMariner~

Greetings,

No, by disabling such functionality in Norton you're simply removing their automatic scanning
when files are transferred in Messenger.  Messenger now has its own virus scanning
capabilities (when turned on) which can use Norton and the file will be scanned again when
the file is run.  So, assuming you had all three of these on, the file would be scanned -3-
times which is brutally pointless.

Are you sure you've completely removed Windows Messenger?  What you're describing is classic
symptoms of Windows Messenger running in the background.  You can double-check by opening up
the Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del), choosing the process tab and looking for msmsgs.exe
which is Windows Messenger (msnmsgr.exe is MSN Messenger).

Ok. I've done this & disabled the Norton AV scanning of Messenger.

I checked the task manager & it does not show up. I also ran the remove
sequence you described in one of your first msgs in this thread: "RunDll32
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove " but I get a
msg that says "MSN Messenger 4.7 is not installed on this PC".

HOWEVER, when I go into my Program files I see that MSN Messenger is indeed
in the program files. If I try to remove it, it takes my ability to IM out.
So I guess I'm getting confused as to why they are both there in the first
place & how I can get rid of the Windows messenger & still have my IM
capability.

FYI, I'm running Messenger 7.5. I see that Messenger Live is available, but
isn't that just at the Beta stage & not really ready for mass consumption?

Sorry for all the questions, but it's getting a bit frustrating & confusing.

Then Windows Messenger (not MSN Messenger) is gone.  There actually was never a MSN Messenger
4.7.

This is MSN Messenger 7.5.

Windows Live Messenger was released and is now out of the beta stage.  Feel free to upgrade.

Ok. Guess I now have my nomenclature corrected. It's WINDOWS Messenger that
was removed by putting running that "remove" sequence. However, people are
still seeing me "online" when my PC isn't even on. Is this still a Windows
Msger problem? And if so, why is it still happening when I ran that "remove"
sequence as you suggested?

Meanwhile, I upgrade to the Windows Live how do I make sure that it DOES NOT
install into my Startup?

Thanks again,

#1. In Option, under General tab make sure the Automatically  run Windows
Livce Messenger when I log on to windows
#2. Open Start, then Run and type msconfig
The last tab should be Startup. Check if you have msnmsgr.exe there, if you
do, uncheck it.

You actually can't stop it via msconfig -- it'll start anyway.

Yeesh. Why is are the Msger programs being made so invasive? Consumers want
the ability to start & stop it when THEY want to. IF I AM GOING TO INSTALL
MSGER LIVE I WANT THIS ABILITY.

Meanwhile, I am STILL experiencing the logging off problem even though I
have disabled my Norton AV policing of Msger & run that "remove" procedure as
previously mentioned in this thread.

Thanks,

Greetings,

This indicates that the Windows Installer is damaged.

To correct this, click Start, then Run, and type the following:
%systemroot%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver
then click OK.

Then try again.

I am hoping you can help me.
I am running winXP Pro, serv pk 2, installed the latest and greatest Windows
Live Messenger (even tried the Beta version), and when I try to use Remote
Assistance I get this message:
Your invitation was not sent because you need the latest version of
Messenger to use the Remote Assistance feature. Please go to the Windows Live
Messenger update site to install the latest version.

I have tried to uninstall, reboot, reinstall, in various ways and cannot
seem to solve the problem.

Can you help?

Thanks,

Mathew
Jonathan Kay [MVP] - 25 Oct 2007 04:34 GMT
Greetings Matthew,

What's indicating is that you need Windows Messenger installed to do Remote Assistance in
Windows Live Messenger.

Yes you need the old Windows Messenger to do something in the latest Windows Live Messenger.
I realize the wording is wrong and I realize the link is wrong.  It's been reported and
someday Microsoft might even fix it.

Anyway, what you need to do is install Windows Messenger (you don't need to use it, it just
has to be there) from:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8d9eb73-5f8c-4b9a-940f-915
7a3b3d774

After this, Remote Assistance should work from Windows Live Messenger.
