Does anyone know if I can text message my friends cell phone from Windows XP
or Office XP?  If not, can you recommend a download that's trustworthy and
won't fill the system up with a bunch of crap?

Greetings Shawn,

Windows itself doesn't have this functionality, Messenger (well, a few versions of it,
including the latest MSN Messenger) does allow you to send to Passport accounts that been
setup for MSN Mobile but that's about it.

AIM/ICQ do allow you to send SMS's directly to numbers, but whether or they "won't fill the
system with a bunch of crap" is a matter of opinion.
