I'm trying to import an .avi video file into Windows movie maker but I get
this message
The file cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is
not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and
install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to
import the file again.
Where do I go to get acodec, and how do I install it please?

You need to find out what codec was used to make the avi file. Then find
this codec and install it.
You may also find that Movie Maker even after installation of the codec
cannot import the file. It is best to convert the file into a type it will
edit, which are dv-avi or wmv.

I agree with Graham but you may get lucky.
Go to this website: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm to
download the Windows XP Codec Pack.
Since the Codecs that are part of this package are used quite frequently you
may just get lucky.
