Can one import a sequence of images into MM and have them treated as a
'clip'? I can not figure out how to do this.  My files are all in one folder
with names like a_001.bmp, a_002.bmp, a_003.bmp, ..., etc.  Could not see an
explanation for this in the documentation.  Thanks.

If you mean one image per frame, 30 frames a second.... you're better off
using something like VirtualDub that can put them into a single clip and
then import it into Movie Maker.

If you mean images that will show for a few seconds each, then import them
and the project of Movie Maker can combine them into a video file when it
makes the movie.
