i've done all the main things; nothing is muted or anything. on the speech
recognition tab there's a little bar that indicates the input; you're
supposed to talk and the bar will go up. when i plug or unplug my microphone,
the bar goes up and then down. when i talk, nothing happens, the bar is just
empty. i know it's not the microphone; i've tested it on various things
including another computer. if you have any questions, just ask. thanks!

First, make sure the mike is not plugged in a speaker socket.  Next,
check the mike itself, some have their own On and Off switch.  You
state that it is not Muted, but is the slider at least half way up?  Then,
rightclick the sound icon (probably next to clock bottom righthand corner
of the screen), and click "Adjust Audio Properties", an click the Audio
tab and look down to Sound Recording, Default Device.  Has the correct
one been selected?  Click on the down arrow to see all devices that are
available.  Do not select Modem.  Let us know.

the choice isn't even there; there's only one choice.

And, what is that?  It should be your sound system like
SB for Sound Blaster or whatever.  If it is not, then you'll
need to reinstall your soundcard drivers.  They should be
on one of the disks that came with your PC, may be a
utility disk.
