IPOD (30GB) Itunes weird songs totals

On Itunes the Library music songs total says      4477 songs,
on Itunes the IPOD music total says                    4451 songs
and in the IPOD itself, Settings>About also says 4451 songs.

What is happening that when Itunes is set to synchronise everything,
that some songs get 'lost'?

thanks yes. I found a blog with some answers.
I had to deliberately corrupt the .itl database file and accept a
rebuild using the existing .xml file and music folders. I had to include
a little editing of the .xml file previously, too. The problem was a
combination of incorrect .itl data, some invalid entries in the xml
file, and a couple of dozen duplicates. Quite a days work!
