I recently attempted to update my 2006 version of itunes and then promptly
got the ERROR 2096 itunes can't run because quicktime failed to open. I tried
doing what apple said by addressing the compatability issue but it was
already deselected so that failed. I then tried uninstalling itunes and
quicktime and reinstalling them 5 times w/o any success.

Go to the iTunes Support centre (first hit on the above Google link).

Or :

Corrupt file ? Re-download from another site.
