Problem with MS Access file on Peer to Peer

We have two desktop computers (both Gateway - one new 610
and an older 400c). The 610 came with XP home and we
upgraded the 400c from win98 to XP Home (both operating
systems have been updated via Microsoft's update
routine).

Using Linksys wireless (USB - G) adapters we have set up
a peer-to-peer network.

The 610 is now considered the main computer and we have
setup a shared folder (all users have access) from which
we want to give the old  PC (400c)  access to several
Word, Excel and ONE  MS Access data base file.

Both PC's have MS Office 2000 (including MS Access)
installed and updated to SR-3.

Both PCs connect and see each other and we have been able
to see and share the files in the shared folder.  The
files in the shared folder include MS Word, Excel
Documents plus one MS Access file (originally developed
in Access 2000 - SR-1)

However, we are having difficulty with the MS Access
file.

Issue/Problem:
We created a short cut on the old PC (the 400c) to the
Database file on the new PC (the 610) when we click the
short cut we get an error message that the file doesn't
exist. However we can navigate on the 400c thru explorer
o the shared folder on the New (610) PC and see the
database file, when we click the file in explorer MS
Access opens and gives an error message to the effect
that the file open by another user and is not accessible
(it also mentions something that it could be related to
permissions).

If I go to the New (610) PC and cut and paste the file to
another folder (on the 610) then copy the file back into
the shared folder, the short cut works on the old (400c)
PC, the file opens in MS Access without any problem and
we can process in the database from the old PC. (We know
it isn't the recommended method to share an Access Dbase,
however when we can get the file open on the old PC, for
testing purposes, we can also open the file on new PC and
actually process on both PCs at the same time).

Once we shut down and restart both machines, the
Issue/Problem re-occurs. How can we resolve this
issue/problem?

Any suggestions or comments with regard to a permanent
resolution would be greatly appreciated.

For anyone interested, we turned off the automatic
compacting of the Access dbase file and it seemed to
clearup the issue.

If anyone can shed any light on why the problem occurs it
would be greatly appreciated.
