I have a small network with the host being an XP and the clients 98. I cannot access the XP box from the clients, even though the XP is visible in the network neighbor hood of the 2 clients. I get the error message "compaq not accessible. No permission to access resource". I noticed that I do not have the option of sharing the C drive on the XP. In the properties for the C drive there is not "sharing and security" option listed.

Any ideas out there

I tried to follow your instructions but I seem to have tried everything alreadsy. Just to mae it clear: I am using XP home edition. In the drive properties I do not have the option "sharing and security" listed". I  also noticed today, that in the folder options as described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304040 I also cannot see the option "use simple file sharing (recommended). This seems to be pointing to the problem. If this option is not listed, it is also not selected. If simple file sharing is not selected, file sharing obviously won't work. How can I enable simple file sharing if it is not listed in the folder options?

Bruno,

in Windows XP Home Simple File Sharing is always selected by
default. This is unchangeable, hence no setting to select. This
is normal.

Ok, I understand. However, is it also normal that I can not see the "sharing and security" option for the C drive (right-click on C drive) for example?

Bruno,

sorry, I have no XP Home system in reach at the moment. Could
somebody else please chime in with this information?

Sorry that this is not a solution, but I have tried to
set up a network identical to yours except there is only
1 98 client and I am not able to view the other pc in the
network neighbourhood on either machine, what did I
forget to do.
