This is a duplicate of my post on the W98 forum. Hope I
receive better luck here.

Ok, sounds like it is an authentication issue. When you
map a drive, do you have to provide a machine-
name\username and password to access the xp drive? If so,
that is my bet.

When browsing via n-hood, "I am pretty sure" you are
accessing the folder with your Win98 credentials, not the
XP pro credentials. If you map the drive you are providing
the xp credentials to the xp machine.

I had overcome this with a PDC in the netowrk, thus when I
log onto a workstation, I am logging into it with domain
credentials and not workstation, local credentials...I
hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. No auditional authentication is required whether I
map or browse the N'hood. But this is a good point. On some W98's I've
turned off password caching. I wonder, now, if that's an influence.
I'll tweak with the User IDs in both evironments, as well.

I had the same problem that you seem to have. I have a new XP machine and a 98SE machine that could not see the XP machine. I played with just about every setting that you can think of. I installed the XP SP2 RC1 update CD and as soon as I did that my machines were able to see each other. I even got my laptop (Windows 2000) to join my workgroup. Just make sure you create a restore point on your XP machine before installing the SP2 update, just in case it creates problems else where. Hope this helps,

It sounds like you are having the same problem that I was having. I have a newer XP machine and a machine running 98SE. The 98 machine could not see the XP machine ( I believe pinging was successful, I can't remember). I played with just about every setting / configuration that I could think of. Anyways, I recently installed the XP SP2 RC1 Update CD to my XP machine and without any further manipulation, my computers were able to see each other. I was even able to add my laptop (windows 2000) to my home network. Just make sure that you create a restore point on your XP machine just in case the SP causes some problems. Hope this helps.
