Autostart service isn't starting

I have to manually start the Workgroup service after I restart my
computer. It is set to autostart, but it doesn't start. When this
happens, I have no network access.

I am running two XP Pro computers connected via a 10/100 switch
in a simple peer-to-peer sharing arrangement. The network works
fine when I start the service manually, but I don't want to have to do
this every time I do a restart.

Is there any way to force a service to start?

Mark,

no, you have to remove the cause (and I would prefer that
anyway).

Next point is to check the error message in the system event
log. What does it say?

I have multiple autostart services that are not starting. It isn't
just this one service. There are no error messages being
generated for any of these services. I can start these services
manually and they continue to run without any errors being
generated.

Mark,

is the start mode of these services set to Automatic at all? If
not, set them to start automatically. If yes, I can't understand
why they don't write anything into the system log if they cannot
start.

They are set to automatic, but nothing is being written to the log.
The ones that did start do have a log entry indicating a successful
start.

I just checked my other computer and all entries marked automatic
are running.

Looks like my primary computer is having a major services issue.

Mark,

yeah, looks like it. (:-)

You say they start just fine when you start them by means of the
start button? That's kind of strange, perhaps a timing issue.
They start later, but they cannot start during the boot process.

I don't have many ideas on this one, particularly when there are
no log entries. The next thing I would try is a repair
installation of Windows XP, unless somebody else comes forward
here with a very good idea of how to make these services start
automatically.

Hello!

I have exactly the same sympton... and unfortunately not able to solve (some
service do not start while being in automatic and for example the one for
network).

hope someone can come up with a suggestion
