After having installed two belkin ethernet cards in my
two PC's,Both XP home, one stand alone, one embedded,
only my newest one shows both PC's in network, the older
one (2 years) doesn't even recognise itself !! Both PC's
have SP2 installed. I used 'How to set up a small network
with Windows XP Home Edition' (813937). I am using an
R45J crossover cable. Obviously I cannot transfer
files. :-(

Ferdy,
Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify SP level with each computer.
From each computer, test connectivity and name resolution:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (10 tests total).
Let's start with these diagnoses.
Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Ferdy,
The Windows platform (including Windows 9x and NT/2000/XP) has its
networking infrastructure based upon TCP/IP, with NetBIOS Over TCP/IP
(NBT) used as an interface between TCP/IP and the various networking
applications.
Any properly configured installation of Windows will run just fine with
these components.
Beware of any advice, on web pages or otherwise, that contains
instructions to install redundant and unnecessary components such as
IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. Adding these extra components may serve as a
workaround, but will add needless complications that may cause problems
in the future.

Beware of anyone discouraging you from an experience. All of the advice
offered here is safe. The only way to determine what works best for you is
to try ALL suggestions offered until it works. Then and only then can you
determine when advice is helpful or not.
Remember, don't let anyone discourage or deny you your right to decide for
yourself.
