Here is my configuration. Simple LAN Peer to Peer in a workgroup without a
domain, set up behind a router and two switches. I have my compter set to a
static IP, which is port forwarded to from the router in order to access
files remotely.
Here is my problem. When I have the computer set up with the static IP I can
not view other computers in the same workgroup. I get the error "\\workgroup
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. ect...". I am sure some of you have seen this message before.
Now here's the funny part. I can do a search for the computers on the
network and access them all. Can not find nor access my computer from other
computers. I have Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP under the Advanced--> WINS
configuration.
When I set the TCP/IP to obtain an IP address automatically, all of these
problems go away. I have check all of the DNS,IP's, and gateways, and
everything there is correct........Please help!!

assuming you have correct tcp/ip settings, what do you receive when using
net view \\hostname command?

I get a positive response from each computer, ie - Share Name,Type, Used As,
Comment, and it lists the shares. Also I can access them through My Network
Places.

When you set up the static IP are you doing this from the PC or the router?
It sounds as though you're doing it from the pc.
Try doing it from the router instead, assuming it provides the LAN with DHCP
services. The pc should then be set up to get its IP address automatically.

How would I do that?? I am a little familiar with routers,, but I have not
seen anywhere I can configure that.
We have a static IP set for the router from out T1 line. from that point
everything is routed to each computer. The only way to access my single PC
remotely is through Port Forwarding to a certain IP address behind the
router. In which way could I do the same thing from the process you are
talking about?

Sorry for the delay in replying
Which model router do you own? I'll look at the manual if I can find it
online.
Does your router have a section about LAN ip set up? Where you can set the
start and end values of the IP addresses you can set?

I guess we can assume the static address for DNS, gateway, etc. are the same
as the address for the DNS, gateway, etc. when it has a dynamic address.

Do you restrict any ranges?

Example: At home, only IP addresses that fall within a certain range can
access my main PC. Dynamic addresses are outside of that range.
