I installed XP SP2 and all Local Area Connections under network connections
have disappeared.  Yet I am still able to use the internet.

In Control Panel under Administrative Tools and Services the Network
Connections service (this service depends on RPC service) and COM+ Event
System service (this service depends on RPC service) show starting, not
started.

In addition, there is an error message under msinfo32 stating that it cannot
collect any information since it cannot access the Windows Management
Instrumentation Software.

Any clues what is going on?

Did you figure out what was causing this problem?  I have the same problem
all of a sudden on a computer that has been in my LAN and working fine for
several years.  If you found a solution, I'd appreciate your letting me know
about it.
