Network only works in one direction

I have set up a network between two computers, A being the server and B on
the network. A can see B and access it however b cannot access the network. I
have unique names, they are both in the same workgroup. I have reinstalled
all the tcp/ip settings as well as file sharing and microsoft networking.
Also checked registry for the restrict anonymous setting. I have gone through
this newsgroup and tried almost everything. It appears that I have a check
mark in the wrong place as computer b is being denied access. I am using the
windows firewall. Computer a is xp home sp2, computer b is xp pro sp2.

Any ideas as I am fresh out

First, try pinging one machine from the other. If that doesn't work then
sharing won't, and you have a fundamental problem.

Then try turning off the firewalls temporarily, see if that affects things.

As the server is XP Home there shouldn't be any security issues, although
changing group-permissions or the like, or changing registry settings which
are permissible in Pro can break sharing in Home. In general it would be
better if the Pro machine were the server.

You could try creating a user-account on the Home machine that has the same
username and password as the one on Pro. That may get things working if it is
a security problem.

I can ping both each computer from the other, using both address and name. I
have turned off the firewall, I have checked the browser service. I have
uniqe names, no passwords. Both computers can access the internet. I have a
Belkin wireless router that can see both boxes on the lan setup.

With the server running XP Home (and Simple File Sharing), did you activate the
Guest account properly?

Guest account is configured properly. I have another hard drive with xp pro
sp2 on it that I installed in my server box. Booted up and the network works
like a dream. There just seems to be a setting in the registry or a
permission setting that is wrong on the xp home. It just won;t let me have
access. It is driving me carazy.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. What
antivirus do you use?

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each

I use Avast pro antivirus. It is on both computers. I will uninstall it, see
if this helps then run the ipconfig and browstat programs.
