only https - page cannot be displayed-

hi

new to windows- long time mac user

new computer, hp running windows xp, explorer was able to go to "login"
sites such as online banking.  now whenever i go to a "https" location, the
page cannot be displayed.  i already set my internet options to
"automatically detect" LAN settings and it did not work.  I also selected
SSL2.0 and SSL3.0 in advanced internet options.  no luck.  please help,
someone!
