I have windows XP with Norton Internt Security. I have disabled the Windows
Firewall and only use the Norton's Firewall. I am facing problem with port
forwarding.

I have setup my router for portforwarding to my static IP. But it does not
work. For a trial I set my computer as DMZ(i.e. routing all request to my
PC.) but still it does not work. Now keeping my computer DMZ I disabled
NORTON (antivirus & firewall) but still port forwarding did not work.

Can anybody help me out in this matter?

Regards,
- Vinay.

If you take the Shields UP! test at http://www.grc.com that will tell you
which ports are open.

Have little faith in recent versions of Norton AV/Firewall, would strongly
suspect the trouble lies there - although if your router has its own firewall
then this might still be blocking the ports. In some routers opening a port
or DMZ doesn't create a firewall rule, you have to do that as well.

If the machine is a DMZ then a firewall is strongly advised, otherwise it's
akin to a direct modem connection as regards security.

When working on problems like this, don't disable the firewall - uninstall
it.  Most non-Microsoft firewalls don't disable completely or correctly.  If
your computer was in the DMZ and you still couldn't pass traffic over some
ports then it's almost surely the firewall's fault.

Hi Richard,

I understand that uninstalling Norton May solve my problem. ButI need to
maintain Norton and the Port Forwarding. How can I have both of these??

Uninstall the firewall software, correct the problem, then reinstall the
firewall software and configure it to your now-working network.

In matters of forwarding ports, I always look to
www.portforward.com
