This morning when I tried to log onto PC, when eventually reached blue user
log on screen (very slow...knew something was wrong!), when i clicked my user
name and entered password, got login error message....'could not log on
domain (computer name) not available!

yesterday all was well. in safe mode works ok, all programmes seem to run.
can log onto user name ok.

i dont recall doing anything network wise ever never mind recently. and the
PC has been up and running since i last installed anything.

have 'repaired' xp installation from disk but still nothing.

virus scan is clear.

any ideas please??

Try to logon locally and Ping the DC.  After you get logged can you get on
the internet if allowed?

hi scott.... thanks for the info but excuse my ignorance....

the pc is a stand alone...only wireless networked for internet.

i have tried the ping command, but the window opens and closes so quickly i
cannot read it., same with ipconfig.....

luckily i have internet access via laptop on the wireless link.

can you please explain logon locally?...it all works fine in safe mode. when
i go to network in the control panle, the window is empty when i open it.

cheers

Your computer has been configured to log onto a domain-based network.  If
you are not logging into a domain, you need to remove that information from
the network configuration to restore your usual performance.
