networking and sharing files between computers

I have a desktop running XP and a laptop running xp and have a lnksys router
so i can connect to the internet my question is this how do I share files
and such form both computers?

First, both computers must be in the same workgroup.

Second, open Explorer, rt-click the drive or folder you want to share,
scroll down the list and select the option Sharing and Security...

The easiest way to do this is to run the Network Setup Wizard on one
computer and let it make a floppy diskette that you can then run on the
second computer. You'll find the wizard by clicking the Start button,
opening All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications. For most users
this will do what they need, as it will allow either computer to access the
Shared Documents folder on both systems. You can get more advanced by
sharing other folders and printers between the systems but that should wait
until the basics are in place.

I agree with your suggestion about running the Network Setup Wizard,
Richard. And since both computers have Windows XP, there's no need to
make a floppy diskette

The Wizard will ask how the computer connects to the Internet. If the
Wizard detects the router's shared Internet connection, tell it to use
that. Otherwise, tell it that the computer connects to the Internet
through a residential gateway (router).

Hi there, i have a related problem.

When setting up my home network, 2 desktops via a router, following the
steps in the setup wizard it doesnt seem to actually do anything.

I ran the wizard on both computers (main PC first), i selected "computer
connects to the Internet through a residential gateway", gave the computers
unique names and put them in the same workgroup. After rebooting both pc's i
tried adding files etc to the shared folder and nothing happens on the other
pc. Also when trying to share the printer (connected via USB to the main PC)
with the other computer the wizard cannot locate it.

Any ideas?
