Accessing Computer on Network: Access is Denied

Thread rating: |
Clayton - 28 Aug 2006 18:05 GMT I tried installing the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools, but now I get the message:
Myworkgroup: \\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied
(I have a network ste up at my house, and it was working fine untill all of the sudden, I couldn't access my desktop from my other computers. I need to be able to access the desktop because thats what the printer is hooked up to.
I have three computers on the network. A desktop running XP home sp2, a laptop running 98 SE, and a laptop running XP media center edition version 2003 sp2. I can access files between the two laptops fine, and i can access files on the laptops from the desktop but i cannot access files on the desktop from either of the laptops.
on the laptop running 98, when I try to access the desktop, it asks for a password. I never specified a password, because i am on an encrypted network. When I try to access the desktp from the laptop running media center edition, I get the following message:
Myworkgroup: \\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not granted the requested logon type at this computer.
what can i do so i can access that computer again. like i said, everything was working fine untill suddenly i couldn't access the desktop.
Thanks for your help. )
Chuck - 28 Aug 2006 18:13 GMT >I tried installing the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools, but now I get >the message: [quoted text clipped - 33 lines] > >Thanks for your help. ) Clayton,
If you ran the SRK Tools, and now you have the new symptom, then you'll have to find the problem. First, read about layered problem solving. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html
Make sure that you don't have any misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html
After you are certain that no lower level problems exist, look at your file sharing setup, on all 3 computers as a whole. The Windows 98 computer will be a challenge, but we will help you the best we can. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html

>i looked at all of thoes and tried doing what i could figure out but nothing >worked...is there a way (other than redoing the os) that i could just start >from scratch? You have 3 computers, so you need to start by figuring out which computer has a problem. Then you have to figure out what the problem is. Some folks here will barrage you with suggestions. I'm going to advise you to diagnose the problem.
Look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer running XP, and look at "ipconfig /all" from the Windows 98 computer. Make sure that you don't have a new problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!): <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html# AskingForHelp> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html# AskingForHelp
Then look at the computers running Windows XP. Is the Guest account enabled for network access? Have you activated a share on each one? <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate
Can you access any shared data, on either computer running Windows XP, from the Windows 98 computer?
And please, since this could take a while, reply after my replies. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-post-on-usenet-and-encourage.html#T opPosting> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-post-on-usenet-and-encourage.html#T opPosting

What folder did you copy "browstat.exe" into?
Answer below this line please.

It's more predictable if you copy it to "C:\Utility", then you only type "c:\utility\browstat" to run it, or add ";C:\Utility" to the Path. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html

But we do need to explore the browser issue. Which computer is on, and online with the others, the most?

You'll have to go to CJslaptop, and do "net user clayton /active:yes" there.
For maximum use, though, user Clayton should be setup on each computer, with an identical, non-blank password. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Synchronise> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Synchronise

OK, if we're talking about XP Home, then you're stuck with Simple File Sharing and Guest authentication. So there you have to enable Guest for network access, and note the limitations. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest

I actually have my network working now. what i had to do is enter the following into command prompt on the XP home computer
net user guest /active:yes ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -g Everyone ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -g Everyone
I had already tried with the first three lines, so when I was told to put the second two aswell I had my doubts. Fortunatly it worked.
I would like to thank you for all your help. Although you may not have givven the final solution i'm sure that the virus i got affected my computer so much that everything i've done has been a step in fixing it. Thanks agin
