I have a network with a PC connected by an ethernet cable to a cable
modem and a laptop connected wirelessly via a Belkin router to the
same modem. The notebook has the Internet connection but the PC does
not. I tried everything from simply repairing the connection on the
network to reinstalling windows. After reinstalling, it worked for a
day and then I had the same problem. I tried a USB cable from my modem
to the PC. It also had no connectivity.
Please help. I have Service Pack 2.

If you have a router, then why are you connecting the PC direct to the modem
rather than the router?

No, I connected it to the router.

Your original post didn't say that. It said "PC connected by an ethernet
cable to a cable modem "
is the Ethernet card working? Do you have the correct drivers installed?

Have you tried resetting the WinSock settings?

1. turn off the cable modem and Belkin router by unplugging them,
power down the computers
2. make sure the Belkin is connected to the cable modem with
Ethernet (no USB connections anywhere)
3. plug in the cable modem and the router
4. connect the ethernet from the PC to the router and power up the
pc
5. power on the wireless laptop
what happens when you follow these steps in this exact order?
