Loading XP Home eats my Hard drive space

I have just build a new PC, reusing my old 80 g hard drive with is partition,
as I run one side for me(6 g) and one for the kids games(the rest). I have
left the things on the disk as originally setup i.e. FAT32

I loaded XP OK, but it appears to have used over 4 G bytes of hard disk
space, although if you look using win explorer it has only used 1.5 gig. Is
this normal ????

My C; drive has 6.68GB used space, that's the OS, Norton and about a
dozen apps. The pagefile is 1.5GB.

space has gone

You can use Explorer to examine each folder and find out, it's a bit
tedious though :-)

Try a Google for 'folder size' and see if there are any freeware apps
that will automate it for you.

You said that XP seems to have used 4GB although Explorer says 1.5GB,
where do these different figures come from?

Another thought - if you have installed several drivers/apps then
System Restore will use up a of of space. Right click on 'c:\system
volume information and select 'Properties' and see how much space that
is using.

You need to turn on "show hidden folders & files" and "show system folders" (file options =BB view) to see the actual useage. Hibernate is equal to the amount of installed RAM, System Restore is set (usually at 12%) as a % of drive space, paging file is 1 times the amount of RAM, add in system files and there is the used space.
