I recently upgraded to XP Professional from Windows 98. XP backed up all
the folders and kept them but did not back up any of the files that were
in them.  I lost a large number of pictures.  Is there any way to
recover them or are they gone forever?

They're probably still there, but not where you expect them to be. Do a
search for one of the file names that you know is there, and you'll probably
find the whole bunch.
