I just purchased a PNY 512 MB 2.0 USB Flash Drive. It says that it does not
require a driver for Windows XP Home, and that it should be plug and play. My
OS does not recognize the flash drive at all. I've tried chatting with
Microsoft. The chat requested that I e-mail Microsoft's tech support, but
they wouldn't help unless I paid $35 since the Xp came with my computer at
time of purchase. Can any one help to figure out how to get my flash drive to
work???

What are you expecting to happen?.. do you not get the little popup that
tells you it is there?.. have you looked in My Computer to see if it is
present in the list of drives?.. are your USB ports working?.. you can check
for this in Control Panel - System - Device Manager..

Windows Xp should automatically recognize the flash drive and be present in
the bottom toolbar. Instead it says that it has found new hardwar and opens
the Found New Hardware Wizard. It first asks if I want to connect to Windows
Update to search for software. I chose yes, and chose to instal the software
automatically (recommended).  After it is done searching, it says that it can
not install this hardware because it can not locate the software. But the
Falsh drive doesn't have any software to install in the first place. I think
I am missing a drive required to run it, but I am unsure and have no idea how
to find out.

Hi, Mary K. You don't need to kiss anyone's feet, but you do need to
repost your question as a new subject. This will help you get the
attention you need. Also, this isn't a forum. You are using the web
interface to a newsgroup, which is the worst way you can access this
resource. You should use a real newsreader instead. There are many good
newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook Express since you
already have it. Here is information to help you set up a newsreader
and make a good post:

first thing you need to do is make "New" post and  not attach to someone
else's post

Do you have other USB devices connected to your computer?
Are they working?
How many USP ports do you have?
Are you using a USB Hub?

Do you have USB support enabled in BIOS?

Have you looked in Device Manager?
Does a device show up with red/yel mark beside it?
What is it called?

Yes I do have other USB devices working. And yes they are working. I believe
I have 4. Two in front and two in the back. I'm not sure what a USB hub
is....and I'm not sure about having USB support enabled in BIOS.
And in the device manager there is nothing that you described.
