I have two machines that are running XP. One is running at 1.4 Gigs and shuts down in around 30 to 40 seconds. The other is running at 2.0 gigs and takes over two minutes to shutdown. Probably some program or service is running, and takes a while. (I've got a 1.8 GB processor, but when I close iTunes it's a good minute till the shutdown sequence starts.) If you search the archives for "xp slow shutdown" (no quotes) you'll find a number of suggestions for diagnosing the problem and fixing it. I doubt anyone has anything new to add. I did check to see if anything was running in background but found none. Even went to msconfig and took most all of the startup but still slows down. I had a wave file installed when I shut down "initiating Shutdown Sequence" I have this on both machines. I removed that wav file from the machine and put back the original Microsoft shutdown. The system shut down in 35 seconds. Now come the puzzle I installed the same wave file back and it now shuts down in 35 seconds. The only thing I can think of is that when I installed the wav file the first time something happened??? I have the same wav file installed that I had before and it works fine. If you realy need to keep this file, try playing it through a recorder and resaving it under a different name, then using the rerecorded, renamed file as your shutdown sound. The way I got around it was to disable 'Terminal Services' (Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Software Environment/Services). Having disabled it my PC now shuts down in around 15 seconds. Colon, I have turned it off and put the standard windows shutdown on. It still takes the 2 minutes to shutdown. Went where you suggested but how do you turn it off?? After reading my reply it is confusing. What I mean is that I turned off the shutdown sound and I still have 2 minute wait for shutdown. I am trying to do what Colon suggested and went to where you said to go but how do you disable 'Terminal Services' ? TonySper Colon, I have turned it off and put the standard windows shutdown on. OK, Navigate as follows: Start Contol Panel Administrative Tools Services Navigate to 'Terminal Services' Highlight and right click, choose Properties Startup type can be Auto/Manaul/Disabled Setting to 'Disabled' solve the problem for me.
