The computer froze when I entered an application trying to connect to
the Internet. I had to cold reboot. I looked in the Event Viewer, and
found this:

The USB-IDE Bridge service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

What is the problem? How can I prevent the freeze, so that I can ^AltDel
to stop the app, without the need to cold reboot?

Thanks.

Do you have an external/USB drive?  I suspect a problem with your drivers.

This error has all the hallmarks of a communications error in the
application itself. Situations like this can occur when firewalls,
anti-adware, anti-spyware, etc., are all running. The only thing
to do is to wait for the application and the device it is calling
to time-out and release the hang. Otherwise, esp. when hardware is
involved, the only way out is the cold re-boot and to avoid the
application or to use a patched application. There are just too
many applications trying to surreptitiously call home.
