Outlook Express: compact messages?

I use Outlook Express sparingly - basically to check my "throw-away_ e-mail
address.
It may have two or three messages in the whole pargram at any one time.
Recently, when I exit the program a panel pops up saying
"To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages.
This may take up to a few minutes"
It then gives me the choice to click on "OK" or "Cancel".
I would like to not have that panel pop up every time I go into the program.

I've looked to see if this is an optional setting somewhere, but can not find
anything.
As I said - this started only recently.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

set to happen approx every 100 times you close OE, just click OK and take a coffee break.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES KILL IT WHILE IT IS COMPACTING.

It's set by default in fully up-to-date OE running in WinXP SP2.  You /cannot/ change this.

Thanks.
Since it started recently, I can only assume it is part of one of the many
"improvements" included in the many "updates"  Microsoft chooses to send me.
Sure wish they had built the program before they started selling it .   (-;
Oh well . . . . .

its in the registry. there were so many problems with people losing data because of BLOATED folders that ms took it upon them selves to FORCE a compact occasionally.

unfortunately they did not see fit to clear the counter when you do a manual compact.

Thanks, PA Bear and mikeyhsd  for being patient with me and explaining this in
detail.  I sincerely appreciate it.
Guess my solution isn't what Windows affecionados like to hear, but it is this:
From here on in, I'll use Eudora for ALL my email,

Thanks again, folks!

Installing KB918766 "clears the counter" (resets CompactCount to 0 [zero]), Mikey.  No, KB918766 does /not/ mention this (and it's enabled by default upon installation, unlike what /is/ mentioned in the KB article).  This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook Express...we're told.
