error signature

Every time I tried to donload information/open files an error signature
appears and internet explore closes down. This is what appears in the error
message:
Error signature
AppName:iexplore.exe
Modver: 7.10.3052.4
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
Offset: 000017fb
ModName: msvcr71.dll
Does anyone know what this means and how to sort it out?

Any/every file or just some (e.g., PDF files)?

Pa bear
Thankyou for your advice we have downloaded the spyware that you have given
us but when we are on a web page and want to download any file or information
from these,the error signature box comes up and asks if we want to let
microsoft know and then when we respond to the box we are taken of the web,we
are not up on computers and any help you could give us would have to be
simplified
