In this new installation of XP Pro an icon for MS security is on the
system tray and is constaltly popping up a bubble telling me to turn on
auto-updating (and unless I do my system is going to die the death of a
rag baby and never live to see the back of its neck).  How can I get rid
of that thing?

Go to ControlPanel->SecurityCenter
On the left hand side at the bottom of the menu, there's "Control how
SecCenter informs..."(?)
From there un-tick un-necessary annoyances..
