I'm actually trying to help my father. I just had him uninstall his HP
Officejet software and reinstalled it. I had him connect his all-in-one when
the installtion disc prompted him to do so. He had an errand to run and I
told him to pick up a new USB cord while he was out. If that doesn't work,
I'm thinking he has a hardware problem with the printer. The doc feeds and
appears to be scanning, but the message is the document could not be scanned.
Do you think I'm "on the right track"?

No. Windows is communicating, so there's no problem with the USB cord.
Make sure he removed or slid the lock so the scanner can slide freely.
