Did you open Windows Explorer and locate this under the C:\ Root: [-] My Computer [+] Floppy Drive (A) [-] Local Drive [-]Documents and Settings [+] Admin [+] All User [-] User Desktop Favourites My Documents

Barb - 15 Nov 2007 18:56 GMT I went into Windows Explorer, I did have show hidden files already checked. The only files that were there was an Adobe and a desktop.ini file. Yesterday I searched the internet for help and found a suggestion that the .ini file might be missing information. So I compared the 2 and in fact it was missing LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-28997. So I added that to the file hoping that would help, but no change. I get the error when I try to open pictures with Microsoft Picture It 2001. At 1st it was not giving me Picture it as an option in the list of "Open With". So I removed the program and added it again. I forced the Picture It option into Open With by going into the program files and hitting PIP.exe. But no change, still got the error. The Picture It program is working fine, because I can open the program and work on all my pictures. The problem is the path getting to the program. I really appreciate your help thnak you, Barb

Look here in these result and see if you will find the error you get http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=error+with+Microsoft+Picture+It+2001& qsc0=0&SearchBtn0=Search&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99
If this happened recently you can try system restore to an earlier date, also make sure your system is malware and virus free.
Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some light and post it back in your next post by performing the following and also the System File Checker (SFC) sfc /scannow:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it later for this step to copy the error message on it. Open a run command and type in: eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel. click on each of these: Application System Security Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the causer. On the Event error properties message you will see: Up Arrow Down arrow Two pages Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad. Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us
Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post. HTH. nass ---- http://www.nasstec.co.uk
Barb - 16 Nov 2007 01:55 GMT I already had searched Microsoft website for the error and had no luck. The error message is "C:/Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\My Pictures\8-12-2006.JPG does not exist". But I'm able to open the picture with any other program except Picture It.
I searched the event viewer the only warning I get everyday in Applications is Event ID 1517. "Windows saved user BARBARA\Barb registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account". I went to Help & Support and it said no action required on this event. In System I get an error, Event 7026 everyday-"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: cdudf_xp". I don't know which driver that I have that is bad. Barb

Barb - 17 Nov 2007 00:22 GMT HTH, I did that and no change. I also restarted my computer. I thinking this has to be a Microsoft Picture It problem, because the error I'm getting is from Picture It. But now the error message has the right format of c:\ now. No new event errors. Do you know anything about Picture It?

You said: " The only files that were there was an Adobe and a desktop.ini file."
What Path did you find these two files found in? BTW, if you select Start and at the bottom where it says Log Off, what name is listed there, User or something else?

OK then that tells me you are logged in as Barb, so the path is C:\Documents and Settings\Barb\My Documents\My Pictures
You should now open Explorer and look for...
Local Disk C: Documents and Settings Barb My Documents My Pictures
Click on My Pictures, in the right hand pane, what do you see?

Let start over here if we may.....
In one message you said....... "I get the error when I try to open pictures with Microsoft Picture It 2001"
What Error are you getting?
In another message you said.......... "Please help me locate this file."
What file are you looking for?
Another message you said....... I located the driver cdudf_xp and restored it.
This file is for Roxio, why did you replace it?
Please answer all questions.

Is it easy to remove entries from "openwith"? With trying to get Picture It to work I have some bogus things I have added to openwith.
Sorry I know this is a weird one, Barb

!st I was trying to find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Barb\My Documents/My Pictures\8-12-2006.JPG or a Picture It folder in that file, but I guess the folder doesn't matter because the other photo programs I have are not there and they work fine.
I got off on a different subject with the driver cdudf_xp, because one of your people asked me about errors I was getting in the event viewer. I'm still getting that error, but I guess it's associated with Easy Creator 7 and I Have Roxio Easy Creator 9.
The main reason for my writing is I wanted to be able to use Picture It was my default program for pictures. It has always worked in the past, but I did something to mess it up. Right now they open with Windows picture and fax viewer. I also have Nero 7 and Easy Media Creator 9.
Thank you so much for your help! Barb

OK I think I understand better now what you are trying to do.
Let try this..... Do a search for any jpg file, doesn't matter where it's at. Once found right click it and select Open With. If you do not see "Picture It" listed in the context menu then select the "Choose Program" button. Do you see "Picture It" listed anywhere there? and if you do select it then also check the box at the bottom to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

OK lets se now, you are saying the 8-12-2006.JPG can be opened with Picture It without problem and what you stated that picture is located in the "C:\Documents and Settings\Barb\My Documents\My Pictures" folder.
On another post you said you checked that folder and nothing is in there but Adobe and a desktop.ini, so how can Picture It open a file in a folder that doesn't not exist?
I know this is all confusing but hang in there and hopefully we will get it sorted out.
You also say Picture It can open the file, but Microsoft Picture It 2001 can't, but you think there is a problem with the path to Picture It. If Picture It opens the file and Microsoft Picture It 2001 can't, then there is a problem with Microsoft Picture It 2001 not Picture It.

You do have "Microsoft Picture It 2001" installed on the "I" drive and you also installed on the "C:" drive then you uninstalled it from your "C:" drive, correct?
OK, what happens if you open "Microsoft Picture It 2001" and click File Open, then point it to your :"J" drive where all your pictures are stored?
Most programs will remember the last folder you point to and the next time you click File Open, it will default to that folder.

OK lets try this as it appears to me by installing "Microsoft Picture It 2001" on the C: drive as well, you changed the path when you right click a file and choose Open With, Even though you uninstalled it the path must still be there because of the error you are getting.
Open Windows Explorer and go to your pictures on your "J" drive. Right click one of them and select Open With then select Choose Program. Select the Browse button then find the folder you install "Microsoft Picture It 2001" in on your "J" drive, Find the EXE file and select it and click OK. Next select the " Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" only if you want to double click these files. If you just want to right click and select Open With do not check the box.

Sorry about getting the J and I mixed up, but you knew what to do in any case. Well I can only imagine it's lots of Registry entries that's got this thing all messed up. By installing it again on your C: drive there's no telling what has changed.
If this problem was on my machine, I'd uninstall the program and reboot my system. I would Create a Restore Point then I'd go into the Registry and do a search for "PictureIt" and remove everything I found. I would then reinstall the program on the "I" drive and see if that cured it. Now remember, I said this is what I would do. It's up to you if you feel comfortable in doing this. I've been changing things in the Registry for the last 12 years, so I'm comfortable in what I'm doing,

Thank you! I think you understand what my problem is. I cause a lot of my own problems, because I think you should be able to move a program from one drive to another. I also moved Nero 7 and Easy Creator 9 over to my "I" drive and I'm getting errors in the event viewer from them. I have Norton Utilities 2002 that I use the auto repair problems. It may not correct problem to the best solutions automatically all the time. Someone told me I should keep all my programs on the same drive with my operating system for the best performance. But I hate to do that incase I have to reinstall the operating system.
I really appreciate you taking the time and sticking with me on this! I will try uninstalling "Picture It" and maybe I should just reinstall it on my "C" drive.
Thanks again, Barb

This can be achieved by performing custom installations along with setting up one's own destinations for the applications (viz., one's own target destinations or folders) that are outside of the boundaries of MyDocuments in the root drive by re- configuring the property boxes for these applications. Ultimately, the applications' program files and data files goes where the user wants them instead of where the applications programmer is telling the user where they should be. There are so many different ways of doing things and one should follow the dictates of what one really prefers.

I understand about not playing around in the Registry if you don't feel comfortable. Anyway sorry we couldn't get this solved, but we sure gave it a good shot eh? If you uninstall and reinstall and that fixes the problem, please let me know.
