If you continue to have difficulties you will be better positioned to
receive help if you post questions to a more appropriate group. Or even an
appropriate group - this one, as the title suggests, is for Windows XP, not
98. Perhaps try microsoft.public.win98.setup.

And your question has what to do with Windows XP, the topic of this
newsgroup?

Your Windows 98 CD may not be bootable.  From past discussions, it
appears the SE version might be bootable but I never bothered to get it
so I never had a copy to test with it.  Use a bootdisk that adds CD-ROM
device support so you can run the setup program from the install CD.

You need to boot the machine with a Windows 98 Setup floppy diskette, I
don't think that Windows 98 cds are bootable.  For more help please post
to one of the Windows 98 help groups.

Unless you have Windows 98SE then the CD isn't bootable. If you are using an
older version of Win 98 then you will need the Windows 98 boot disks. Try
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm You will, of course, need a floppy
drive and a set of floppy disks. Start the install with the floppies first
then slip the CD into your CD-ROM the setup should then access the CD and
installation should proceed.

Win98 CDs weren't usually bootable.  You need to start out with the
accompanying boot floppy diskette.

IIRC Win98 CDs weren't bootable, and you have to start the install by
booting with the Win98 Setup Diskette.   This of course means that your
system has to have a floppy drive.   If it doesn't you may be able to use a
USB floppy drive, around $20.

If you don't have the floppy disk,  images for these can be downloaded from
various places.   Basically you just need a bootable diskette with CD
drivers, so you can get to the CD and run Setup from there.
