Running xp pro. Tried windows update, which recommended updating to sp2. Gets
halfway thru with the installation then quits with a access is denied
message. Have tried the steps at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222/ and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;873148&Product=windowsxpsp2.
I looked at setupapi.log to find the problem. Points to
hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\ssdpsrv\\dependonservice. Went to
regedit to check permission and it was already set to "full control" and
"read". I've tried the windows update countless times but always with no
luck. It gets stopped at the same spot each time. Would trying to install in
safe mode solve my problem? ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Why even bother with sp2 now that sp3 is out?

I'd back up your entire system

then download sp3

then apply it

Don't I need sp2 installed before I can install sp3?

I think sp3 can be installed if the machine has *either* sp1 or sp2

No, SP3 contains all the updates for XP.
Mike.
