Hello;
I went to look at what I had done so far and I noticed an error specifying
missing hardware devices but the drivers for those locations appeared ok.
(drive's  b: & c:). besides doing a total restore is there any way to
reinsert those two missing hardware icons back so  I can use them ?  thank you

Give this a try   www.dougknox.com   Select  WinXP Fixes   and  scroll
down to  rt column  11 down.   Restore Dvd/Cd
drives to WinExplorer.  Download the fix.

the help you have giving me so far has been great.  However I was only able
to get one cd drive converted. I still need drive E: do I need to run this
for each drive I need converted?  the error message was that it couldn't find
that particular physical drive name. I will continue tommorrow with this
thanks for all your halp I will close up on this then. if you have time just
leave me a note and tell me what I can to to correct my ways or do at this
point.? thank you much--Don--

Don, from what you said if you open MyComputer you see the  C, D but not
the E drive Icon. I would try right clicking
  MyComputer>select  Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>Dvd/Cdrom Drives.
Click on the plus sign and you should
see two entries for your cdrw drives. If there  rt click on each one and
choose Uninstall. Restart your Computer and let
  WinXP reinstall the drives.
