Is it possible to have an icon on the desktop which, when clicked, will show
My Computer with the Folders view already opened?  Or an icon that will
show  just the Folders view tree?

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're looking for but you can try the
following.

Right click an open spot on your desktop and select New -> Shortcut from the
menu.
Copy and paste the following into the location box. Note: Include the trailing
comma.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,

Hit the Next button.
Name your new shortcut something like Explore My Computer.
Click the Finish button.

Take a look here for more info.

Thank you for replying. I am sorry that my original question was not very
clear.

I have put a 'My Computer' icon on the desktop, (from Start, My Computer,
right click, select 'Show on desktop').

When this icon is clicked, a 'My Computer' window opens with a Folders
button on the standard toolbar. Clicking on this Folders button produces a
left-hand pane displaying an hierarchical view of 'My Computer'.

I used to have an icon on my desktop which, when clicked, would open up 'My
Computer' with the folders left-hand  hierarchical view already open. I have
lost this latter icon, and want to re-create it.

Regards

Dee.

Did you try the instructions I provided in my earlier response about creating a
shortcut to open Windows Explorer with My Computer expanded?

Here they are again.

If that doesn't work, try creating a shortcut with this command as the target.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

I have got a very apologetic look on my face at the moment.

I have now tried your first suggested solution, and it produced the required
result. Initially I went to the Microsoft site to which you gave a
reference. I saw  “/e, <object>   starts Windows Explorer using its default
view with the focus on the specified folder”. I then got involved in trying
to work out what to use for <object>.

But your first suggestion did what was wanted, as I have now found out. Very
many thanks for your replies.

Additional - if you want to make the folder tree view the default for any
instance of explorer:

Tools/Folder Options/File Types/select Folder (not "File Folder") and
click the Advanced button - select "explore" and then click the "Set
Default" button.  To make the folder tree NOT the default, select "open"
instead of "explore".

No matter which is default, you can always right-click on a folder and
then select either "explore" or "open".

Interesting. Thank you for that information.

Dee, in addition, after the "e," you can  specify which folder you want
to view as a default.   Here's what my desktop icon looks like:

        C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,  d:\downloads\

Now, when I click on the icon, windows explorer opens with the
downloads folder always in full view.   You can customize it to whatever
folder you want to open for viewing.

Thank you Elephant for drawing attention to that information. The Microsoft
article mentioned by Nepatsfan seems to contain something along similar
lines.
