Why can't I turn automatic update on? I'm running XP (SP2) with the firewall, and have just got Internet access (through Comcast cable). When I try to turn the auto update on through the firewall, it fails, and I'm told to do it through the Control Panel. But, all of the automatic update options are blanked out and can't be changed. So, what do I do??? I HAVE tried re-installing SP2, with no difference. Hi Its probably disabled from the Group Policy. Try this : - Start > Run > type "gpedit.msc" - expand "Computer Configuration" - Right click on "Administrative Templates" and click on "Add/Remove Tamplates" - Click on "Add" and select "wuau" - Click "Open" and then "Close" - expand "Administrative Templates" - expand "Windows Components and click on "Windows Update" You should see a list of things there. "Configure Automatic Updates" should be "Not configured" for the options to be selectable. Hope that helps. > Why can't I turn automatic update on? Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc Press Enter Locate the - "Automatic Update" Make sure the service is not disabled and started. 2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started: Go to START, Select RUN Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll Press Ok 3.
