I've been having some BSOD crases recently, ran chkdsk/ r from recovery
console and this has solved the crashes, but I'm now getting the "standard"
paging file error message:

Limited Virtual Memory
Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small.

To fix this problem, go to System in Control Panel, click the Advanced tab,
and under Performance, click Settings. On the Advanced tab, click Change.
Click 'Custom size,' and then type an initial or maximum paging file size.

I want to attempt to resolve this in line with the KB article 315270,
(4. On the File menu, click Properties. Click the Security tab to view the
current permissions.
5. Click Add, type computer name\system, and then click OK.
6. Click Add, type computer name\Administrators, click OK, and then click
OK. Note that you must type Administrators, not Administrator)

unless I'm being really stupid, the properties menu from the file menu
doesn't have a security tab. Where would I be able to look at administration
permissions in order to attempt changing allocated paging file sizes?
(Incidentally, I am system administrator).

Don't know if this helps but a complete system search including hiddens
cannot find "pagefile.sys", there literally isn't one on my system, as others
have reported).

Additionally, could the paging file error also account for the fact that the
computer is currently taking 20-30 minutes to start up each time?

Any help kindly received

Is this home or professional? What is the file system? Is the drive intact?
You can run a disk diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web
site.

You have to reboot the computer in Safe Mode (F8) to see the security tab.

You're not the only person having paging file errors, and this solution
didn't fix the problem for me. But you can try it anyway.

Also, at the Welcome screen, pressing Alt-Tab may bring up an error message
that you can click on to complete the PC startup.

Thus far, I've been unable to get my computer to accept the custom Paging
File settings. Out of desperation I selected the "No Paging File" radio
button in the Performance Options - Virtual Memory window. Now the system
boots just fine. Time will tell whether this causes more problems than it
solves........

I've now tried the resolution according to KB article 315270, this too hasn't
helped. I'm running Windows XP Home and the drive is intact. Unfortunately I
can't run system restore, I'm assuming this is also due to lack of virtual
memory?

As I mentioned before, I think the problem is that there is no pagefile.sys
file on the drive. According to one source on the internet, Intel apparently
have some kind of accelerator product which can help. Does anybody know about
this?

Finally, most problematic for me is the fact that the 30 minutes my computer
is taking to reach Windows when it starts - I assume this symptom is related?
Anything I can do about this specifically or is it all related to the lack of
virtual memory my computer apparently has?

Did your errors start on or after April 12th?   Try this.

Open Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.  Make sure the "Show
Updates" checkbox at the top of the window is selected.

Scroll down the list and locate the entry for "Security update for
Windows XP (KB 908531)".  If that was installed prior to April 25th
then uninstall it.  Reboot the computer and go to Windows Update and
get the new (released April 25) version of this update and install it.
That may fix at least some of your problems.

Good luck
