I've noticed that opening the control panel is taking an annoying amount of
time. On minor investigation it transpires that whenever the control panel is
opened the services.exe process grabs about half the cpu time, sits there for
maybe 10secs before releasig the processor at which point the control panel
opens. Can anyone give an explaination for this and a possible a cure. It
happens on all my XP pro machines (SP2). Thanks, Ashley

Services.exe should have nothing to do with opening the Control Panel.  The
Control Panel runs in Shell32.dll under explorer.exe.

The Services Control Manager (services.exe) is responsible for starting,
stopping and interacting
with system services.

[[Note: services.exe can be a process which is registered as a trojan. This
Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations,
stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a
security risk and should be removed from your system.]]

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea.  Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them.  Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

Wesley, I appreciate the reply. The anti-virus software (panda) is fully upto
date and has always been. I've rescanned anyway and nothing has shown up. I
certainly appreciate there is no direct connection between services.exe and
open the control panel. However, a simple look in the task manager shows the
service.exe process grabing the processor (50%) when control panel is opened
either from the start menu or through 'my computer'. I appreciate this is odd
but there you go!

Do you have more than one services.exe running?  There should only be one
running.

Do a Search on your computer for services.exe.  See this.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/services.exe.htm

The legitimate services.exe is usually found in
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

To determine if this is caused by a browser extension (also loads with
explorer.exe processes), disable the tool bands and Browser Helper Objects:

1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.

Open Control Panel, or folder window and observe the behavior. If the
problem persist, undo the above setting. Try ShellExView to determine if a
shell extension is causing the problem.

Using ShellExView, disable all the third-party extensions (non-Microsoft),
and restart.
