When I insert USB memory drive into my HP a850y it asks that I copy the file
to my hard rive for editing.  My IBM think pad does not do this, adn allows
editing right on the stick itself.

What an id doing?  This is realy a nuisance.

Many thans for your feedback.

When you try to edit this file on your HP does it give you some type of error
- This file is read only, etc..

Anyway if it says that you need to copy it to your hard drive for editing
then this would seem like the case.

Removing read only:
Go to Start -> Run, type in cmd and hit enter. from there type ATTRIB -R /S
/D X:\*.*   where X is the USB drive letter. This will remove the read only
attribute from all of the files on your USB drive.

Dan - I get a message "File cannot be opened directly from this device.
Please copy file to an open folder and open the copy".

You solution did not work.  I also tried severla utilities that change
attributes and they did not work either.

My IBM Thinkpad opens the files fine from the USB memory disk memory.

Many thanks for you help.  Any other ideas, or perhaps others can chime in
here.

OK, strange error - the only time I got an error that was anything like that
error was when I was trying to copy a file from a Mac OSX system to my NTFS
formatted USB hard drive. Apparently the Mac didn't like it too much. Getting
back to the problem...

Just a couple of questions to get a better idea of the problem:
1) What program is this file for (what is the file extension)?
2) Does this happen only with this file or every file on your drive (can you
transfer files back and forth on the USB drive on your HP)?
3) Are you using the same operating system on both the HP and the IBM?
4) Are there any errors listed in Event Viewer that have to do with trying
to open this file from your USB drive (go to Start -> Control Panel ->
Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer. Look under Application and System and
note the Source with the Event #)?
