Desktop Icons

I would appreciate advise/help on the following:

Windows XP Home - Icons on Desktop work fine and by clicking on them,
they open the appropriate program. However whenever I create an icon to
open a web page and I click on it - nothing happens, even doing a right
click and clicking OPEN - nothing happens.

I have tried various ways of creating these icons, Right clicking on the
Desktop, click new, create shortcut, insert the URL, click finish and I
have put the URL into the address bar for IE7 and then dragged the IE
icon to the left of the URL onto the Desktop.  Both of these methods
work on other computers, but not on the computer I am currently working
on.

I would be very grateful for suggestions on how I might solve this
problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't have any effect, just like the
single click.

Right click the Icon and select properties,
Show what is on the Target line.

OK, I can see what you are doing,

Just for an example of what I use,

http://www.google.com/

Takes me to the Google Internet browser.
I usually don't put anything after the slash unless I need an index or
specific program,
but  the 3 w's are needed in front of the URL.name.

Just a quick follow up on creating a shortcut,

Right click on the desktop, select New, Shortcut,
Type:  http://www.Google.com/
(ignore the underline)
click Next and Finish.

Jerry,

Thanks once again for your input.
Unfortunately your suggestion does not work.

It is obviously a problem with the particular computer, your suggestion
works fine on two other machines, but the computer in question has a
problem with Desktop Icons that relate to a Web Address. It works fine
with Icons for programs on the computer.

As a further guide to the problem, when I created a shortcut, as
suggested, to Google, the shortcut is displayed with a typical large G
for the Google Icon, the properties URL box read exactly as mentioned in
your reply, but whether I single click, double click, or right click and
use Open on the Drop Down Menu, nothing happens, it is as though the
facility to open a Web Site via a Shortcut has been disabled on the
computer, I don't know whether such a thing is possible, but if it is, I
would love to know how to enable it again!

I hope you may have further suggestions,

Many thanks

Something is interfering with the Web site connection,

Go to the Control panel, select Classic view,
Double click Internet options,
Click Security tab and select Internet,
Click Advanced tab, scroll down and select Turn on automatic website
checking.
Next
Double click Network connections,
See if your Lan or High-Speed Internet shows it is connected.

Thanks Jerry,

However, After selecting Internet Options and then Security Tab, the
Internet, there is no Advanced tab displayed. The only boxes shown are
Custom Level and Default Level.

Scrolling down the Custom Level does not show Turn on automatic website
checking.

Any further ideas?

What version of Internet Explorer are you using ?
Version 7 is the latest one.

Another thought,
Go back to the control panel and double click network connection and
properties,
right click your connection Icon,
and make sure Internet Protocol [TCP/IP] is checked.

Thanks once again Jerry for your input, sorry for the delay in coming
back.

Internet Explorer is Version 7 and the TCP/IP is also checked.

It really is very strange, there must be something particular about this
computer's settings, as every other computer I have tried - 7 in all -
do not have this problem.
