Low virtual memory

I am running windows xp and keep getting an error message that the system is
low on virtual memory and that windows is increasing the size of the virtual
memory paging file.
On the C disc there are 13.1 used GB and 24 free Gb.
On looking in the advanced systems info the recommended paging file size for
all drives is 381MB and it is currently allocated 489MB.
The actual paging file size is 384-768.
The space available is 25131 MB.
It is set for windows to manage.

We have only just started having this problem, and don't really understand
why it should happen when we seem to still have plenty of memory left. I
regularly use defragmenter and cleanup.
Is there anything we can do to remedy the problem and are the above settings
correct.
Any help appreciated on this one as I am a bit in the dark.

The message means that you have too many applications and/or application
windows open for the amount of memory (physical RAM + virtual memory)
that you have available. The solution is to close applications and/or
application windows, or to buy more RAM.

As a practical matter, you should also suspect malware, which can use
vast quantities of memory.

(BTW: Don't confuse memory with storage space; the former refers to RAM
while the latter refers to your hard disk.)

How much RAM memory?

Are you running photographic and other graphics programmes? Those with
undo features can create considerable demands for memory!

What programmes are you typically running?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

How much RAM memory?
