CPU Problems slowing computer down.

Hi,

About a week and a half ago my computer started having problems. It seems as
though there's something wrong with the process "System" when I go into the
task manager. It will use up about 50% of my cpu when I try to do certain
things. I have the problem with it being slow mostly when I watch movies or
play games. I'm assuming it means that I've got a graphics problem. I have
the latest driver for my graphics card so it shouldn't be causing me any
problems there. I can't seem to find anything when I've searched here so I'm
hoping that someone can come and save me from this problem as I don't really
have the money for a new computer at the moment.

Hi Ben. Try running a Full Service Scan from:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm
I've run it on two computers, and I've been quite impressed by the results.

Thanks for the link, but I'm afraid it hasn't fixed my problem.

Ben

At StartUp, later or all the time

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on
your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information.

How much RAM memory?

What is your processor speed?

Hope  this helps.

Ok

the commit charge numbers are:

Total 261144
Limit 1276224
Peak 424208

My hard disk is 144GB with 36.9GB free

My processor is a P4 2.9ghz

And my ram is 512mb

The thing is that none of this was a problem up until one day when the
computer just started going extremely slow.

The figures look OK. Is the computer left on 24/7?

Is rthere a pattern as to when the computer is slow i.e, on booting or
later?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon  ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon  ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

It's sometimes left on overnight, but not usually. It will usually boot up
fine although I have noticed it being slightly slower since all of this has
happened. I've got McAfee Suite which has an anti-virus/spyware and firewall
in it. I usually find it really slowing down when I go to play a game or
watch some sort of video. Even loading pictures on the internet slows it down
a bit. I'm going to give the HD tune a go and I'll post what it's like after.

Thanks,
Ben

That's fine.

What appears in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot which
failed. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also
appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

We still need to rule out malware!

Otherwise, you may want to try the EventID4226 Patcher listed on page 3

In each case you need to check whether the Error or Warning has occurred
before?

Can you search your hard drive for copies of utorrent.exe using Windows
Explorer. The version number in the report could indicate malware.

I am not sure whether you are seeing all files and folders. Go to Start,
Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and verify that
the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide
protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need to scroll
down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box
before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. Next in
Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

http://www.file.net/process/utorrent.exe.html

Are you using utorrent? Some ISP operate a broadband Fair Usages policy.
At peak times they can place restrictions on users who use this type of
programme.

That is an indication that something is trying to phone home and
failing. It could be malware or a misconfigured programme or service.
What is happening before may provide a clue.

Could be a driver problem.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,

Another place to look is the speed of your internet connection.  It seems to
me
that slowing down while playing games or slowing down while downloading
pictues
from the internet point to some kind of network problem..

Thanks for the idea, but my internet connection is fine. This type of thing
also happens when I'm offline so I think it's safe to say that it's not the
problem in this case.

Ok the TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of
concurrent TCP connect attempts. Is a security limit imposed by Microsoft,
hard coded into the tcpip.sys file.  There are patches available on the
Internet just look for that even id. I see that the normal thing that causes
this is the problem\ any bittorrent client will hit this limit due to closing
and opening new connections when peers come and go.   This is slow down
browsing while your running your torrent program, it does get annoying I can
say that.  I just patched it myself, make sure you backup any file your
changing just in case;)

Good luck,
-Marc

These are your two problems.  512mb memory is hardly enough to run 2
programs at one time these days.... Considering McAfee Suite has installed at
least 7-10 background running processes, it's a wonder your computer can get
out of it's own way.  I would reccomend at least another gb of ram, and to
get rid of that garbage called McAfee.  Try NOD32...it's by far the best
around.  http://eset.com .  Good luck!
Gerry - 14 Oct 2007 22:24 GMT
McAfee be part of the problem. Adding 1 gb could well be totally
unnecessary and possibly a total waste of money.

Not at all true. 512MB is more than enough for most people running
Windows XP. Even 256MB is enough for some people.

How much memory you need for good performance is *not* a
one-size-fits-all situation. You get good performance if the amount of
RAM you have keeps you from using the page file, and that depends on
what apps you run. Most people running a typical range of business
applications find that somewhere around 256-384MB works well, others
need 512MB. Almost anyone will see poor performance with less than
256MB. Some people, particularly those doing things like editing large
photographic images, can see a performance boost by adding even more
than 512MB--sometimes much more.

True, McAfee is second only to Norton in hurting performance, but it's
no so bad that it would cause such a problem by itself.

Way, way, overkill for the enormous majority of XP users.

Task Manager won't yield enough information. Instead, use Process
Explorer:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Also, you should supply specs with your next post, including amount of
RAM and type of graphics card.

Since this is a recent problem, you may also have malware. Have you
scanned? And if so, with what?

Have you installed new software recently or done anything else which may
have caused this problem?

Finally, is your problem only when online? Or do you also have problems
offline, too? If the former, it might be an Internet connection issue.
What kind of connection do you have?

Thanks for the link for process explorer. I started it up and then went to
play one of my games so I could see what was eating up all the CPU, but even
with that it still says "System" is using up about 45-50% while the game is
using up most of the rest of it. I've got 512mb of ram installed which hasn't
been a problem even though I could do with at least another 512mb and my
graphics card is an ATI Radeon X550.

Just a shot in the dark, in case you installed some of the Microsoft August
Updates: Could the "About" in the "About a week and a half ago -" mean that
the slow down just happen to start in that time frame?

Did you observe the System Process be different BEFORE the time of slow down?

Would doing a System Restore to a point / date before the "About a week and
a half ago -" be an idea, to see if this is a hardware related problem or not?

I can't be sure exactly when it happened because I'm not always home and on
the computer myself. I have tried many different restore points, but each
time it fails and so I can't be sure if it would fix the problem. But it was
about a week and a half as in might be a day off of when it started.

You need to expand that (click on the plus sign so it becomes a minus
sign).

It was expanded, but it wasn't showing what was using it, just showed that it
was using so much of the cpu.

Ben

Place the cursor on the Image name, right click and select Properties to
see the available tabs. The remainder of the post was written
specifically for svchost.exe so some might be relevant for what you wish
to investigate.

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the svchost
producing the high CPU usage, right click, select Properties,
Services. Note there are the full names and some explanation of what
each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services
are dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies
tab allow it a little time to display the information.

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

Hope  this helps.
