I just tried to use system restore after a spate of BSODs, and when I clicked
the final "next" button in system restore, the pointer switched to an egg
timer for a moment and then nothing happened. What might have happened?

Try in Safe Mode and see if the Restore will be success.
What the Spates of BSOD were?, is the machine Malware/virus free?.

Same thing in safe mode, and the system is regularly scanned for viruses and
spyware, with nothing coming up.

Hi Dave,

I would suggest addressing the BSOD issue before going any further with
System Restore.

Start a new thread and post any information (changes made to the machine,
software or hardware) you can leading up to the BSOD and any error messages
that appear.
