I get getting an error that says "can't write to drive C out of disk space" .
This is a brand new computer with an 80 gb hard drive and in properties I
have used less than 10 gb.

Is the drive FAT32? Are you trying to write a file that's larger than
4GB? 4GB is the maximum size file on FAT32, and if you try, you get
the extremely misleading error message you quoted.

The file system is NTFS and I was downloading the Adobe Shockwave Player.

Then in that case, my guess as to what might be wrong isn't correct.

Hmm, just a few wild guesses:

1) I saw a similar thing on a Linux machine just a few months ago. And
then it had ran out of inodes, which effectively means it has no slots
available for keeping the administration. Can it been that NTFS has a
similar thing? In that case having lots of small files will get the
disk full way before all space is used.
2) Can it have something to do with sector size and the average file
size. Again if you have lots of small files, you'll end up with a lot
of slack (unused space in a sector).
3) Are there multiple users on the PC? Are the other users perhaps
having a Recycle Bin that is full of junk?

Good luck

I have had the computer for 3 days.  i am the only user and I'm just now
starting to put my "stuff" on it.  It's a Gateway E4610D with 512 mb ram, 80
gb hard drive
with an Intel Pentium 4CPU 3.20GHz processor (but that is listed twice in
the control panel).  It was only delivered to me from Gateway a few days ago.
I do have my 200 GB external hard drive hooked up on it but other than that
I only have what the mfg sent.

What happens when you run CHKDSK on the drive?

To see the full results of CHKDSK it is best to first open a Command
Prompt window and then enter

CHKDSK C:

in that window.

Good luck

chkdsk shows 45213448 KB available on disk ...I defragged the drive also.  I
did contact Gateway because this is a new pc but their advice was to contact
Adobe (whatever) .....The thing that worries me the most is in my event
viewer I saw where system restore had been turned off because of low disk
space and would resume when there was at least 200 mb of memory.  Within a
few minutes I saw where it had been turned back on.
